Garville vs. Harlequin

28/5/2010

Garville and Harlequin has always been a close game with many players evenly matched. Last round we had played them Harlequin took the game by a small score. Therefore it was no surprise that tonight’s match was much the same, with the leading team always under 8 goals.

Stacey Peckover opened the game with a nice penalty goal after the first minute. The tight defence from Natalie Zesers, Megan Lokan and Kirsten Sterrey gave the team 3 intercepts within the first 3 minutes. The score was close the whole quarter with just two goals the difference at quarter time, Garville 10 to Harlequin 12.

In the second quarter Harlequin stepped up and scored the first three goals of the quarter putting pressure on our players. The defenders varied their style, changing from 1 on 1 tight defence to zone defence. The defence also provided strong back up down the court in transition. WA Carla Stonier kept the team spirit up by charging in for strong intercept in our goal third, resulting in a goal and lifting the team up to fight back against Harlequin. Stacey worked the baseline and top of the ring while Abby Williams (GS) used her height as an advantage in the ring. By half time, Garville had fought back to keep the score within two goals, Garville 20 to Harlequin 22.

Megan Cain swapped with Abby Williams to GS and Anna Wyatt cam one for Megan Lokan into GD. Within in the first three minutes Harlequin had extended their lead to 4 goals. Megan Cain provided strong drives out of the goal circle to open the space up more and shot at a 100% with 7/7 in her third quarter. Hannah Horlin-Smith at C was strong and persistent in her leading and reofferring down court. Harlequin had snuck in a few more goals in the third quarter, leading by 8 at three quarter time.

The last quarter saw Abby Williams back on as GS. The Garville girls never gave up fighting for the match, with Carla Stonier (WA) always present at the centre passes. The last few minutes of the match saw the game had only 3 goals the difference, but with small errors and rebounds Harlequin took the match by 5. Garville 41 to Harlequin 46.

The Garville girls kept playing throughout the match hard and strong for the ball. Their first three minutes of each quarter was the decider for the games results. With 4 strong 15 mins it is no doubt that this team will be successful next time.
